Edmonton Veterinary Clinic Cairns
Melioidosis - Your pet too can suffer from this deadly disease!

The current Melioidosis outbreak in Cairns and Far North Queensland is a concern not only for humans but also for our beloved pets.

At Edmonton Veterinary Clinic & Cattery we are still seeing positive cases in both cats and dogs.

This bacterium can cause serious health issues and highlights the importance of vigilance and proactive care. It is crucial for pet owners to stay informed and consult with veterinarians if they are concerned about their pet’s health.

Together, let’s ensure the health and safety of our furry companions. If you notice any of the symptoms below, please contact your local vet immediately.

Signs & Symptoms of melioidosis in pets:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy & weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Coughing or difficulty breathing
  • Skin sores or abscesses
  • Neurological symptoms (in severe cases)

How to reduce the risk for your pets:

Try to keep pets away from muddy or stagnant water. Be vigilant in washing their paws if they have been outdoors. Reduce the access to wet soil. If exposed to wet soil, we recommend you wash your pet’s paws and dry well.

If you suspect your pet may have been exposed, please contact us during business hours on (07) 4045 5555. If after hours, please contact your nearest 24-hour veterinary clinic. Alert: Time is crucial in dealing with this disease so please don’t delay seeking veterinary advice.
